CHOICE OF WORDS:
(1.) Русское существительное "характер" (как совокупность психических черт человека) передается английскими словами temper 1., nature и character. Существительные temper и nature обозначают поведение, привычки человека в повседневном общении с другими людьми. Существительное temper предполагает характтер, сложившийся в результате жизненного опыта, общения с людьми и изменяющийся под их воздействием: to have a sociable (cool, cheerful) temper быть по характеру общительным (хладнокровным, бодрым); Her temper improved with years. С годами у нее характер стал лучше. Существительное nature подразумевает врожденные или унаследованные свойства: a cruel (cheerful) person by nature жестокий (весёлый) по природе/по характеру человек; nothing could change his difficult nature ничто не могло изменить его трудный характер/нрав. Существительное character, в отличие от temper, подразумевает оценку характера, психического склада человека с точки зрения моральных норм: a man of strong (of weak) character человек сильного (слабого) характера. (2.) Существительное character имеет также значение, не свойственное русскому существительному характер, а именно - персонаж, герой: the main character of the novel главный герой романа. (3.)
